Legal Aid Data Breach Exposes Sensitive Information
A major data breach has hit the Legal Aid Agency, exposing private information from people who used its services—including victims of domestic abuse. The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) confirmed that the agency’s system was hacked in April, and data going back to 2010 was stolen with about over two million records taken.
The stolen data includes information from a wide range of cases including domestic abuse victims, family legal matters and other criminal cases. The stolen information may include: Names and addresses, Dates of birth, National ID numbers and other sensitive data. At the time of reporting, there is no evidence that other government systems were affected.
The Ministry of Justice is warning people to:
1. Be alert to unusual phone calls or messages
2. Change passwords if they think their accounts may be affected
3. Verify identities before sharing personal information
If you think you may be affected, stay cautious and take steps to secure your personal information.
